Richmond Palace was a Tudor Palace, built by King Henry VII, on the banks of the River Thames in Surrey.It stood on the site of an old royal palace called Sheen, which was virtually destroyed by fire in 1497, and it was named after the King (who was known as The Earl of Richmond before he won the throne from King Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth in 1485).
The palace from 1509 to 1650. Henry VIII promptly married his brother’s widow, Catherine of Aragon, and in 1510 Catherine gave birth at Richmond to a son, Henry. There were great celebrations when he was christened at Richmond, but he died a month later. Catherine produced only one child who survived, Princess Mary.

Their last performance was on the 3rd February 1603, just weeks before Queen Elizabeth I’s death. One of the numerous assassination attempts on Elizabeth’s life came at Richmond in 1598.
