Ten time winner of the Prime Minister‘s Trophy for Best Integrated Steel Plant in country, Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) is the flagship unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Government of India undertaking. It produces high strength Rails, heavy structurals, wide and heavy steel plates of different grades, merchant products, wire rods etc. Bhilai became the first integrated steel plant in the country to surpass the 5 MT mark in crude production in the year 2005-06.
SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant has registered record calendar year performances in several areas during the Calendar Year 2023. For the first time, the Plant crossed the milestone of 5 MT (million tonne) in Production and Loading of Saleable Steel for despatches in a Calendar Year on 14th Dec’23.
Jun 14, 2018 · Modernized and expanded with an investment of more than Rs. 18,800 Crore, Bhilai Steel Plant would now have an enhanced hot metal production capacity of 7.5 MTPA from earlier 4.7 MTPA, which will be the highest among all steel plants of SAIL. The new Blast Furnace no 8 – Mahamaya - alone has a capacity to produce 2.8 MTPA. The new Steel Melting Shop no. 3 will increase the crude steel capacity to 7 MTPA from earlier 3.9 MTPA and the new Bar and Rod Mill will double the capacity to 2 MTPA.

Bhilai Steel Plant, which supplies rails to the Indian Railways, ended the fiscal 2019-20 with a cumulative production of 12.85 lakh tonne of UTS 90 prime rails, thereby registering a growth of 30% over the volume of prime UTS 90 rails produced over 2018-19.
