William IV (William Henry; 21 August 1764 – 20 June 1837) was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of Hanover from 26 June 1830 until his death. William, the third son of George III of the United Kingdom and younger brother and successor to George IV was the last person to rule both the United Kingdom and Hanover .
Aug 16, 2022 · William’s elder brothers, George IV (Charlotte’s father) and Frederick, Duke of York, left no children to survive them. When Frederick died in 1827, William was therefore first in line to the crown, and became king upon George’s death in 1830. Aged 64, he was the oldest person ever to ascend the British throne.

William IV was the grand duke of Luxembourg (1905–12), the eldest son of grand duke Adolf of Nassau. Falling severely ill soon after his accession, he eventually on March 19, 1908, had his consort Maria Anna of Braganza named regent, or governor (Statthalterin).
William IV, later Duke of Clarence, was the third son of George III and Queen Charlotte. ‘The Sailor King’, he spent much of his early life at sea. In 1818 he married Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen; sadly none of their children survived to adulthood. William succeeded his brother, George IV.
