Sage Vasishtha is one of the Saptarishis, seven stars of the constellation. The word Vasishtha denotes unparalleled brightness. According to his name, he has conquered all the negative qualities like desire, anger, miserliness, jealousy, and pride. He was considered as the teacher of Lord Rama and King Harischandra.
The Vasishtha Samhita shares many verses with the Yoga Yajnavalkya, some of which originate in the earlier Padma Samhita. [2] The text, ascribed to the earlier sage Vasishtha , was compiled by an unknown author of the Vaishnavite Shakta sect.
There are two books, namely, the Brihat Yoga Vasishtha and the Laghu Yoga Vasishtha. The former is a big book containing 32,000 Granthas or Slokas or 64,000 lines. “Brihat” means big. The latter book contains 6,000 Granthas. “Laghu” means small. The Yoga Vasishtha contains a system of ancient philosophical thought unique in its kind.
Vasishtha is a revered sage in the Hindu traditions, and like other revered sages, numerous treatises composed in ancient and medieval era are reverentially named after him. [26] Some treatises named after him or attributed to him include: Vashishtha samhita is a medieval era Yoga text. [27] There is an Agama as well with the same title.
