Locusts are part of a large group of insects commonly called grasshoppers which have big hind legs for jumping. Locusts belong to the family called Acrididae. Locusts differ from grasshoppers in that they have the ability to change their behaviour and habits and can migrate over large distances.
Locusts are the short-horned grasshoppers with highly migratory habit, marked polymorphism and voracious feeding behavior. They are capable of forming swarms (adult’s congregation) and hopper bands (nymphal congregation). They cause great devastation to natural and cultivated vegetation.
Behavior. In solitary phase (low numbers and densities), locusts behave as individuals, much like grasshoppers. In gregarious phase, they form dense and highly mobile (marching) bands of hoppers and flying swarms of adults (winged locusts), which behave as an entity. Biology.
