Rachid Bouchareb admits that, whilst preparing the film, he was inspired by Jean-Pierre Melville's L'Armée des ombres (1969), arguably the best known film about the French Resistance, and sought to recreate its oppressive atmosphere in his film. There are some striking similarities between the two films - both have the ambiance of a hard-boiled American gangster film; and the FLN members in Bouchareb's film are portrayed in a similarly heroic light as the doomed résistants in Melville's.
