Sir George Everest, CB, FRS, FRAS, FRGS (/ ˈ iː v r ɪ s t /, EEV-rist; 4 July 1790 – 1 December 1866) was a British surveyor and geographer who served as Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843.
The highest mountain in the world is named for a surveyor, Colonel Sir George Everest. It is a fitting tribute to the man who, for more than twenty-five years and despite numerous hardships, prevailed in surveying the longest are-of-the-meridian ever accomplished at the time.

Having received a military education in Marlow, Everest ventured to India at the age of 16, joining the East India Company.
Unbeknownst to most people, Sir George Everest probably never even saw Mount Everest, much less climb it. What’s more, he wasn’t even comfortable with the idea of the mountain being named after him. He did, however, have a number of achievements that deserve recognition, especially today – on his 227th birth anniversary !
It was 1841 when an obscure peak in the Himalayas was recognized as the tallest mountain in the world by a British survey team led by Sir George Everest, and whom Mount Everest was named after in 1865. Today, climbers from across the world attempt to scale it’s mighty face.
