Vasily Vasilyevich Smyslov (Russian: Васи́лий Васи́льевич Смысло́в, romanized: Vasíliy Vasíl'yevich Smyslóv; 24 March 1921 – 27 March 2010) [1] was a Soviet and Russian chess grandmaster, who was the seventh World Chess Champion from 1957 to 1958.
Vasily Smyslov was the seventh World Chess Champion (1957-1958). He is the record holder for most Chess Olympiad medals, with 17 total medals, and was also a two-time Soviet Champion (1949 and 1955).

Smyslov first began to attract international attention when he defeated Samuel Reshevsky twice in the famous U.S.-USSR radio match of 1945. His first of eight Candidates Tournament appearances came in 1948, where he finished third.
