It was found in the private apartments of Tipu Sultan and presented to Major General David Baird by the Army of the East India Company as a "token of their high esteem of his courage and conduct in the assault" which resulted in the killing of Tipu Sultan - known as the Tiger of Mysore.

The two swords comprise a sword (tulwar) and scabbard from the personal armoury of Tipu Sultan (1751-99) dated c.1796-97 which is estimated at £1.5m-£2m and a second gem-set and enamelled sword (tulwar) and scabbard, also from the armoury of Tipu Sultan, dated to the first half 18th century.

Tipu Sultan was the Indian Muslim ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore based in South India between 1782 and 1799. He was commonly referred to as the "Tiger of Mysore" and was famous for the commanding role he played in wars.
