Richard Brooks. (1912–92). American screenwriter and motion-picture director Richard Brooks was known for producing films characterized by gritty social realism, especially Blackboard Jungle (1955). He also specialized in adapting literary works to the screen, notably Elmer Gantry (1960), for which he won an Academy Award for screenwriting.
