The Castle Hill was invaded by the Turks in 1541 and remained under their rule until 1686 when the Austrian Habsburgs reclaimed it. The Turkish occupation left the Castle District in ruins. The Habsburgs initiated immediate reconstructions, preserving the old street layout and restoring many architectural features.
