As planned, the British Crown passed to his niece Victoria, daughter of George III's late fourth-eldest son, Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent (1766-1820) and Marie Louise Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (later to become Saxe-Coburg-Gotha).
