Jan 28, 2019 · I don't use any Whatsapp client on Ubuntu, but from my computer I use Whatsapp web: https://web.whatsapp.com. It's an official Whatsapp web site meaning as trustable as Whatsapp phone app. There are plenty of Firefox extensions that work with it. There is also whatsdesk, an unofficial client for Ubuntu.

Dec 31, 2021 · There is still no way to install a native Linux application for whatsapp, so I always use whatsapp's webapp with my daily browser (chromium based brave-browser). Everything works [mostly] fine, except when I need to click on a whatsapp link in a web site, that is supposed to open a conversation with a certain new cell phone number.
To do this in Ubuntu 16.04 (and if I remember correctly is exactly the same in Ubuntu 14.04), just go to "System Settings" -> "Network" -> "Proxy", and delete (left in blank) the socks server line and left port in 0. You don't need to apply this -system wide-, just in the user you want to authenticate in Whatsapp Web.
