The government hoped for a traditional film extolling the heroism of the sailors who led the mutiny against the Czarist military commanders.
Battleship Potemkin (Rus., Броненосец « Потёмкин », Bronyenosyets "Potyomkin") is a 1925 Soviet silent film, perhaps the most famous one directed by Sergei Eisenstein, who later directed Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible.
Odessa, 1905. Enraged with the deplorable conditions on board the Potemkin ship, the sailors contemplate mutiny. After seizing control, their revolt becomes the rallying point for a populace oppressed by the Czar’s Cossacks. The ruthless cavalry arrives to crush the rebellion on the Odessa steps.
This scene, from Battleship Potemkin, is one of the most iconic in world cinema. The film is about a mutinous Russian naval ship during the Revolution of 1905, which shook the entire empire.
