The Act of Union that created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland came into effect on January 1, 1801. This union remained in place until the recognition of the Irish Free State—excluding six of the counties of the northern province of Ulster —by the Anglo-Irish treaty concluded on December 6, 1921, following the Irish War of Independence (Anglo-Irish War, 1919–21).
