Dec 5, 2021 · Francis II of France, the first husband of Mary Queen of Scots, died on 5 December 1560, from an ear condition. Mary and Francis had married in 1558, when Mary was aged fifteen. Francis ascended to the French throne just a year later, after the death of his father Henry II in 1559, in a jousting accident.
Francis was born on the 19th of January 1544 at the ‘Château de Fontainebleau’ in France to King Henry II of France and Catherine de' Medici. Francis was the eldest son and, as such, it was expected from birth that he would one day become the King of France.
