Shahryar Mirza (16 January 1605 – 23 January 1628) was the fifth and youngest son of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. After Jahangir's death, Shahryar made an attempt to become emperor and was successful with the help of his powerful stepmother Nur Jahan, who was also his mother-in-law.

Soon, near Lahore, Shahryar's forces met those of Asaf Khan, (father of Mumtaz Mahal), who wanted his son-in-law Shah Jahan to ascend the throne, and had already proclaimed Dawar as Emperor near Agra, as a stop-gap arrangement to save the throne for Shah Jahan.
Hushang Mirza or Hoshang Mirza (Persian: هوشنگ میرزا; March 1604 – 2 February 1628) was a Mughal prince and grandson of the third Mughal emperor, Akbar. He was the youngest son of Daniyal Mirza and nephew of the fourth Mughal emperor, Jahangir .
Shah Jahan ascended the throne on 19 January 1628, and on 23 January, he ordered the execution of Shahryar, Prince Daniyal Mirza's sons Tahmuras Mirza and Hoshang Mirza, and Prince Khusrau Mirza's sons Dawar Bakhsh Mirza, and Garshasp Mirza. By contrast, all Nur Jahan's former power and authority at once drained away from the erstwhile queen, who now sank to a political nonentity.
