Voyage of the Rock Aliens is a comedy musical, starring Pia Zador, Ruth Gordon and Michael Berryman. Campy and strange and from the 80s released on Blu-ray by Vinegar Syndrome.
From the Alien perspective and since the title IS Voyage of the ROCK ALIENS, I can tell you the Aliens knew their mission. Though clearly, the mission was clouded by confusing plot points, serial killers, a tentacle which was presumably attached to some kind of huge monster. (Never seen on screen likely due to the small movie budget.)
Voyage of the Rock Aliens is one of those, and I'm amazed that I've never heard of this movie before. This movie has everything, it's set in the 80s with some retro elements (beyond Ruth Gordon), aliens, rock music, and a few other things I'm not mentioning specifically to avoid the spoilers (which is why this is covered to the things in the title).
