In 1933, after leaving Dogville, while traveling with her father ( Willem Dafoe) and his gangsters to the southern U.S., Grace Margaret Mulligan ( Bryce Dallas Howard) sees a slave ready to be punished on a property called Manderlay.
In 1933, after leaving Dogville, Grace Margaret Mulligan sees a slave being punished at a cotton farm called Manderlay. Officially, slavery is illegal and Grace stands up against the farmers. She stays with some gangsters in Manderlay and tries to influence the situation.
With four of her father's colleagues and a lawyer, she faces the daunting task of resurrecting the place known as Manderlay.
