A story of two unlikely boyhood friends, the confident and popular Al and Birdy, awkward, withdrawn, and obsessed with birds. The advent of the war in Vietnam shatters their youth, and they and they both return irrevocably changed—one physically traumatized, the other emotionally fractured.
Birdy is such a curious gem from the 1980s that simply does not find much mentioning anywhere in talks of the decade's best films, even though it absolutely would deserve to be remembered for its fantastic portrayal of post-Vietnam trauma, friendship transitioning throughout the years and the desperation of dealing with mental problems of those closest to you.
