According to the Torah, Merari (Hebrew: מְרָרִי, Mərārī) was one of the sons of Levi, and the patriarchal founder of the Merarites, one of the four main divisions among the Levites in Biblical times.

Jan 4, 2022 · Kohath, Gershon, and Merari were the three sons of Levi and grandsons of Jacob (Genesis 46:11). Moses, Aaron, and Miriam were Kohathites (1 Chronicles 6:2–3). The Levites filled the priestly roles in Israel and bore the responsibility of caring for the tabernacle.
Yocheved, Moses' mother and Levi 's daughter, had three children: Miriam, Aaron, and Moses. These three children resembled Yocheved's three brothers, Gershon, Kehot, and Merari, since, according to the Talmud, children generally take after their mother's brothers (Bava Batra 110a).
