Feb 6, 2016 · The Finest Hours true story reveals that a 300-pound man named George "Tiny" Myers was the last survivor to be rescued from the SS Pendleton, aside from its de facto captain, Raymond L. Sybert. Myers lost his life when he jumped from the rope ladder that had been lowered by the Pendleton crew in order to descend into the Coast Guard lifeboat.
The Finest Hours is the gripping, true tale of a heroic effort to rescue the souls huddled within the separated halves of the two ships. Coast Guard cutters rushed to the assistance of those at Fort Mercer, and when it became obvious that half of the Pendleton was in danger of capsizing, the Guard also sent out two thirty-six-foot lifeboats.
