The Tata family is an Indian business family, based in Mumbai, India. The parent company is Tata Sons, which is the main holding company of the Tata Group. About 65% of the stock in these companies is owned by various Tata family charitable trusts, mainly the Ratan Tata Trust and the Dorab Tata Trust.
Sir Dorabji Tata, the elder son of the Founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, was born on August 27, 1859, when Jamsetji was 20 years old. He attended the Proprietary High School in Bombay (Mumbai), and at the age of 16 was sent to a private tutor in Kent. At 18, he attended Gonville and Caius College at Cambridge.

His father, Hormusji Tata, was a spinning mill master who died when Naval was only four years old.
