It is about 82 km (50 mi) long from deepwater to deepwater, with an average depth of 13 m (43 ft) through the Gaillard (Culebra) Cut. The width varies between 150 to 300 m (500 to 1,000 ft).

Prior, ships had to sail around the tip of South America. It takes about 8 hours to cross the Canal's 50 miles (77km). That saves days.

One of our favorite things to do in Panama was to walk along the walking trails of Cinta Costera taking in the views of the city.
