Neo-psychedelia is music that emulates or is heavily influenced by the psychedelic music of the 1960s. It began to be revived among British post-punk bands of the later 1970s and early 1980s and was taken up by groups including bands of the Paisley Underground and Madchester scenes, as well as occasional interest from mainstream artists and bands into the new millennium. Neo-Psychedelia is a genre that saw a rise to prominence in the 90s, but had been in existence for some years. Early acts (such as The Soft Boys or The Church) were very Rock-based, featuring clean guitars and some additional instrumentation and effects (i.e. reverb, distortion).
Some neo-psychedelia was explicitly druggy, while for others it was simply a logical complement to their bizarre lyrics or left-of-center outlooks. Neo-psychedelia has occasionally hit the pop mainstream -- Prince's mid-'80s work, for example, and some of Lenny Kravitz's retro-worshipping output in the '90s.
