Mar 31, 2020 · Using her influence, Asawa was instrumental in SOTA’s founding; hence the reason the school was renamed after the artist. In 2010, twenty-eight years after SOTA’s founding, the school was deemed the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts in Asawa’s honor. Sadly, only three years later, Asawa passed away in August 2013. She was 87.
