Mir Syed Jafar Ali Khan Bahadur ( c. 1691 – 5 February 1765) was a commander-in-chief or military general who reigned as the first dependent Nawab of Bengal of the British East India Company.

As a result of the Battle of Plassey, Siraj-Ud-Daulah was dethroned as the Nawab of Bengal and was replaced by Mir Jafar (Commander of Siraj’s Army.) After Mir Jafar became the new Bengal nawab, the British made him their puppet but Mir Jafar got involved with Dutch East India Company.
When he heard that Mir Madan was mortally wounded, he was deeply disturbed and attempted reconciliation with Mir Jafar, flinging his turban to the ground, entreating him to defend it. Mir Jafar promised his services but immediately sent word of this encounter to Clive, urging him to push forward.

Mir Jafar was placed on the throne by Clive. Mir Jafar’s brief reign in two stints, 1757-1760 and 1763-1765, would be turbulent with the new Nawab unable to cope with the demands of the British.
