In an interview in The Atlantic, Devi stated that once she became a dacoit, she began going after people who had tortured and abused her. As a child, Devi faced devastating poverty and abuse.
Although a high-caste young man was caught and admitted to shooting Phoolan as revenge for the Behmai massacre, many suspect her murder was engineered by powerful rival politicians. Phoolan is a documentary film about the extraordinary life of Phoolan Devi – India’s Bandit Queen. The Phoolan film is directed by Hossein Fazeli.
