In 1950, Robertson worked as ship’s engineer on a Norwegian whaling fleet which worked out of South Georgia in the Antarctic; his song “Wee Pot Stove” details his experiences from this period. During these seagoing years, for recreation Harry and his shipmates would sing or recite traditional songs and ballads, as well as songs and poems that they composed themselves.
Harry was a singer songwriter in the true Oral Tradition. He did not read music, so we learned the tunes for his songs directly from the man himself – often as they were newly written. Once Harry had settled on a tune it stayed constant, but he often re-worked the words in the same way as he fine-tuned the ships’ engines he worked on.
