Etymology of the name: roots and original meaning. Oslo is the capital city of Norway and is also a name with Scandinavian origins. The name Oslo derives from the Old Norse word “Áslo”, meaning “the meadow of the Gods” or “meadow near the river mouth”.
The earliest versions of Oslo’s name during the Middle Ages were spelled “Ánslo” and “Áslo” – “ás” (nowadays, “ås”) meaning “ridge” or “hill”. It was then believed that Oslo’s original name meant, “the meadow beneath the hill”, the hill being the Ekeberg ridge.
