We kick off the 53rd edition of IFFR with a screening of Head South, the festival’s official opening film. Directed by Jonathan Ogilvie, this is a spirited coming-of-age comedy with a sting in its tail, in which a private schoolboy becomes enamoured with post-punk in 1979 Christchurch.
Head South: Directed by Jonathan Ogilvie. With Ed Oxenbould, Benee, Jackson Bliss, Orion Carey-Clark. In 1979, Angus, with his father's support, discovers the underground post-punk music scene in Christchurch, New Zealand, overcoming self-doubt, derision, and a family tragedy to perform.

Synopsis: Christchurch, 1979. Angus, alone for a fortnight with his world-weary father, is drawn into the underground post-punk music scene. Desperate to fit in with this magnetic but fickle subculture, Angus distances himself from his true friends and fabricates his musical abilities.
