In 1861, Bhairavi Brahmani initiated Ramakrishna into Tantra. In 1864, Ramakrishna took up the practice of vatsalya bhava under a Vaishnava guru Jatadhari. In 1865, Naga Sannyasi (monk) Tota Puri initiated Ramakrishna into sannyasa and non-dual (Advaita Vedanta) meditation.
Sri Ramakrishna set himself to the task of practising the disciplines of Tantra; and at the bidding of the Divine Mother Herself he accepted the Brahmani as his guru. He performed profound and delicate ceremonies in the Panchavati and under the bel-tree at the northern extremity of the temple compound.
His first spiritual teacher was an ascetic woman skilled in Tantra and Vaishnava bhakti. Later an Advaita Vedantin ascetic taught him non-dual meditation, and according to Ramakrishna, he experienced Nirvikalpa Samadhi under his guidance.
At the age of 25 (the year 1861), he got initiated into Tantra and yogic techniques by a female ascetic named Bhairavi Brahmani, an advanced tantric teacher, well versed in scriptures. For two years, he went through sixty-four tantrik sadhanas and attained success in all of them.
The Bhairavi wanted Sri Ramakrishna to experience the path prescribed in the Tantras. Sri Ramakrishna also had the approval of the Divine Mother and was eager to pursue the path. Collecting the required things for Sadhana: The Bhairavi Brahmani took great pains in collecting various items specific to the Sadhanas from various parts of the country.
