Tilbury Fort on the Thames estuary protected London’s seaward approach from the 16th century through to the Second World War. Henry VIII built the first fort here, and Queen Elizabeth I famously rallied her army nearby to face the threat of the Armada.

Tilbury Fort originated as West Tilbury blockhouse, a gun fort built with four others along the Thames – then the most important route into England – in 1539–40. This was part of a national programme of fortification under Henry VIII (reigned 1509–47) during a period of international tension.
Visiting Tilbury Fort. Tilbury Fort began as a simple defence with blockhouses along the River Thames. It was part of Henry VIII’s device for coastal defences, and the fort’s purpose was to protect the estuary. In the 17th century, the fort was reconstructed in its current form.

Tilbury Fort is England's most spectacular surviving example of a late 17th century coastal fort, designed at a time when artillery had become the dominant feature of warfare and therefore built with massive low earthworks, resilient to the shock of bombardment, instead of stone fortifications.
