She is the daughter of Greek-Canadian parents Doreen Christakos, a bookkeeper and homemaker, and Constantine "Gus" Vardalos, a land developer who was born in Kalavryta. [2][3] She attended St. George School and Shaftesbury High School in Winnipeg and Toronto Metropolitan University [4] in Toronto.
