The 72-hole stroke-play competiions on both the men's and women's sides were held at a golf course purpose-built for the event, designed by architect Gil Hanse and World Golf Hall of Fame member Amy Alcott.

Golf returned to the Olympics in 2016, for the first time since 1904. The 2020 qualification system and format of the events were the same as used in 2016. 60 players qualified for each event, which consisted of a 72-hole individual stroke play tournament, played over four days.
