Sughand started his career joining his family cloth trading business in Deolali, his hometown, and in 1979 he moved to Mumbai. Here started a printing press specialising in film merchandise for some years, before shifting to film distribution in 1988.
Sughand Films was founded in the early 1990's when the production houses, were churning out formulaic Hindi “Masala” movies created more with an eye on box office collections than on concept or cinematic storytelling.
In 1988, after ten years of careful observation of the mechanics of the film industry, Jhamu Sughand entered film distribution business. In the next six years, he, under the aegis of his new company, FRIENDS INDIA, distributed well over 100 films in the various film territories of India.
