Feb 9, 2009 · Nanashi's death was just left for the audience to decide, that's all. It's much better ending it that way anyway. A 'and they lived happily ever after' ending wouldn't have suited Sword of the Stranger and they can't exactly kill off Nanashi right at the end, that would just plain suck.

Kotaro seems happy, but his final smile is nervous, Nanashi is hunched over and half asleep, and the final shot shows blood dropping from the horse's back. On the one hand, this is enough evidence to suggest Nanashi could die from his wounds.
