Vovchansk (Ukrainian: Вовчанськ, pronounced [wou̯ˈt͡ʃɑnʲsʲk], meaning wolves' town) is a city in Chuhuiv Raion, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Vovchansk urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Population: 17,459 (2022 estimate), about 300 (2024).
Vovchansk Raion (Ukrainian: Вовчанський район) was a raion in Kharkiv Oblast of Ukraine. Its administrative center was the town of Vovchansk. The raion was abolished on 18 July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Kharkiv Oblast to seven.
On 10 May 2024, the Russian Armed Forces began an offensive operation in Ukraine's Kharkiv Oblast, shelling and attempting to breach the defenses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the direction of Vovchansk and Kharkiv. [2] The Guardian reported that the offensive has led to Russia's biggest territorial gains in 18 months. [3]
