Located near Mumbai, Matheran is a small hill station in Maharashtra’s Raigad district that is an ideal place to get away when you want a break from the hustle bustle of the big city. It is especially beautiful in monsoon when the waterfalls nearby are at their roaring best and the deep forests are green and lush.
Website. http://www.matheran.net.in/en/. Matheran is an automobile-free hill station and a municipal council in the Karjat taluka of the Raigad district located in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Matheran is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and one of the smallest hill stations in India.
With its name literally translating to “overhead forest”, Matheran is the smallest hill station in India but is extremely popular in terms of tourists looking for a short trip amid spectacular vistas and serenity.
Matheran is all about the views. Easily accessible via scenic rail from Mumbai, this refuge in the Sahyadri Hills is blissfully free of motor vehicles and affords nearly three dozen lookouts over the Western Ghats and the region's village-dotted plains.
