Kalinjar (Hindi: कालिंजर) is a fortress-city in Banda district [1] of Uttar Pradesh, in India. It was ruled by several dynasties including the Guptas, the Vardhana dynasty, the Chandelas, Solankis of Rewa, Mughal and the Marathas. The fortress has several temples dating back to the Gupta dynasty of the 3rd–5th centuries.
This fort, perched on an isolated flat-topped hill of the Vindhya Range, houses a treasure trove of monuments and legends. Combining the features of a giri durga (Hill fort) and a vana durga (Jungle Fort), the fort of Kalinjar is a formidable defensive structure.
Perched at an elevation of 700 feet within the Vindhya mountain ranges, this ancient and vast fortress is entered through seven gates: Alamgir Darwaza, Ganesh Dwar, Chandi or Chauburji Darwaza, Budha Bhadra Dwar, Hanuman Dwar, Lal Darwaza, and Bara Darwaza.
