Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson (16 January 1853 – 6 November 1937 [1]) was an English actor and theatre manager and husband of actress Gertrude Elliott. He was considered the finest Hamlet of the Victorian era and one of the finest actors of his time, despite his dislike of the job and his lifelong belief that he was temperamentally unsuited to acting.

The Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed. Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson, 1853–1937, English actor-manager. He was trained by Samuel Phelps, made his first appearance in 1874, and thereafter performed with the Bancrofts (1878), John Hare, and Henry Irving (1882). His portrayal of Hamlet was said to be the greatest of his time.
