  1. Aug 21, 2023 · I still appreciate the community edition which is free and still very functional, but it would be nice not feeling limited like I would in VSCode. PyCharm uses up a lot of RAM. Thankfully, I don't really notice the difference because my personal laptop has great specs and my work laptop has enough GB, but I wish it was more light weight like VSCode.

Oct 5, 2022 · My experience about type checking and tab completion is quite different, I use type annotation and vscode's Pylance is much smarter at type hinting and type correctness than Pycharm, heck, I can say Pylance is almost as good as mypy. PyCharm is excellent at refactoring, but vscode refactoring works just fine.

You’re free to use it whenever, and wherever you like, including at work. Additionally, you can fork and modify it.   6. Similarly - PyCharm's first autocomplete suggestion when writing a class is __init__. VSCode offers some operators. Eventually, Copilot is to the rescue anyway. PyCharm git window has a handy "commit+push". whereas VSCode goes with separate add, commit and push. So PyCharm has a nice old-school SVN feeling that works 99.999 per cent of the time.

  7. 100% agree. PyCharm is good when you already know what it has to be done, like setting venvs, but you NEED to get at that level by yourself first. I tried pycharm and it was amazing, but seemed to hide a lot of stuff from me (stuff I didn't even know). My IDE progression was: IDLE, sublime text, atom, vscode.

Yeah the general idea behind their products seems to be "IDE for project's main language, plugins to fill any gaps". The plugins are great but substituting it as an IDE itself is just difficult.   9. ^ that is equivalent to what happens in pycharm but pycharm doesn't need external resources. Pycharm's file is local but is appears remotely. VS codes file is remote but appears local. For non docker this is fine but for docker it creates some oddities like needing specialized versions of your base container to have dev tools.
