The Institute, formerly known as Maulana Azad College of Technology, was founded as one of the country's first eight Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs). The Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology was given the title "Institution of National Importance" by the Parliamentary NITSER Act 2007 in June 2002, when it was also raised to the status of a Deemed University and given the new name.
