Hathyar was not as good as Vaastav, but it would have been a Hit or even Blockbuster if it had came out in 2006 or later on. Because first of all, sequels didn't work in Bollywood before 2006, and secondly, the movie came out in 2002 which was like the worst year for Bollywood in terms of box office. A sequel that flew under the radar.
Had Hathyar been construed as a standalone film it would have got more appreciation. For starters, Hathyar has a better story than Vaastav. Yes, the latter is a well-made film, with some remarkable scenes and dialogues but the basic storyline of a simple man taking to crime after an incident has been done to death in Indian cinema.
