Learn more about the transition to district elections. Foster City is transitioning to district elections. The first public hearing will occur at the City Council's 6:30 pm, October 7 meeting, and the public hearing will start at a time certain of 7:00 pm.

Our Community. Foster City is located 25 miles south of San Francisco on the San Francisco Peninsula. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 30,567. Forbes ranked Foster City #10 on their 2009 list of America's Top 25 Towns to Live Well.
Foster City is now a thriving reality with a population of approximately 30,000 people and a daytime population of employees that nearly equals the evening population of residents. The City is resplendent with trees, lagoons and award-winning homes.
The City Council consists of five Foster City residents who serve the city on a part-time basis, and all of them serve the whole City. They are elected by the voters of the City to staggered terms of four years each.

The General Municipal Election on November 5, 2024 is being held for three City Council seats for full four-year terms ending 2028. Any member of the public who meets the requirements below may run for public office in the City of Foster City
The City of Foster City provides water and wastewater services, and bills residents and businesses according to annual rates approved by the City Council. The City Council typically adopts rates in June for the following Fiscal Year (July through June).
