In classic DooM it is possible to run out of ammo in the long term if you don't manage it well throughout the levels, but so long as you are grabbing items between and during fights, using the proper ammo for the proper enemies, and not missing you will never run out.

Use the chainsaw, The chainsaw regenerates fuel and when you attack an enemy with the chainsaw they drop ammo like a pinata, Bigger enemies require more fuel but I believe they give more ammo, The chainsaw also one shots allowing you to remove annoying enemies.

It's possible to do but if you're running out of ammo I don't suggest it. If you decide to kill everything do as I said and try to knife whenever possible and shoot for the head. It's tough since they move a lot but take your time and it'll save you a bunch of ammo.
