Acid jazz (also known as club jazz, psychedelic jazz, or groove jazz) is a music genre that combines elements of funk, soul, and hip hop, as well as jazz and disco. [1][2] Acid jazz originated in clubs in London during the 1980s with the rare groove movement and spread to the United States, Western Europe, Latin America and Japan.

Acid Jazz. The music played by a generation raised on jazz as well as funk and hip-hop, Acid Jazz used elements of all three. Its existence as a percussion-heavy, primarily live music placed it closer to jazz and Afro-Cuban than any other dance style, but its insistence on keeping the groove allied it with funk, hip-hop, and dance music.
Coined by British tastemaker and DJ Gilles Peterson, acid jazz was an outgrowth of the acid-house boom in London during the late ‘80s, as club music producers began using samples of vintage soul-jazz records from the ‘50s and ‘60s over hip-hop, house, and funk grooves.
