    • See things through. One of the most important qualities men possess is their commitment to seeing things through -- no matter how big of a failure might be imminent.
    • Understand that being a man has very little to do with masculinity. No bank of trivial sports facts or stain of BBQ sauce on your shirt will ever measure your manhood.
    • Say sorry first. In every relationship, there must be a hero. Understand that a hero doesn’t need to wear a cape or mask, as long as he or she resolves a conflict.
    • Love people and use things, and not the other way around. Men realize people are meant to be fallen in love with, not material items. At the same time, a true man won’t use the people around him to provoke an immoral outcome, or as forms of amusement.
    • Perseverance. Greatness is born by perseverance in the face of adversity. Few things worth doing are ever easy. Boys must learn to persevere in the face of adversity now if they are to succeed later during even tougher seasons of life.
    • Trustworthiness. To trust someone is to know that he will stand beside you — that he won’t cut and run when the going gets tough. One of the ways I determine a man’s character is whether I would trust him to cover my back in battle.
    • Courage. Teach your son to lead courageously, to stand by his convictions even when they may result in pain, sorrow or negative consequences. Someday he will lead his own family.
    • Compassion. Is there anything worse than a bully? Is there anything less manly than a thug who picks on those weaker than himself? Point out everyday examples of bullies, and explain to your son the ramifications for everyone involved in each scenario.

Embracing these steps won’t necessarily make the journey easier, but it will definitely make it more rewarding. Remember, becoming a man isn’t a destination; it’s a continuous journey of growth, learning, and self-discovery.
