Fane is an Eternal scholar who evaded being thrust into the Void by the Seven Gods. During the reign of the Eternals before the rise of the gods, Fane was a scholar, working in The Eternal Academy, which was a second home to him.

And Fane can boost and replenish his armours just as anyone else. Just be sure to have poison to heal him if you really need it. Indeed, his healing weakness is compensated by immunity to poison (all poison damage actually heals him) and death fog, which proves handy in quite a few situations.
Fane (and Lohse and I think Red Prince) is someone who is often recommended to be played as a main, since there are layers to the lore involved in his story that change the way you might think about the game.
Fane is, imho, as close to a “main character” as you can get. However, I value him far higher as a companion than as my playable character. As a companion, you get his full personality.
