Steppenwolf was a Canadian-American hard rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1967, the group originally consisted of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist John Kay , lead guitarist Michael Monarch , bassist Nick St. Nicholas , drummer Jerry Edmonton and keyboardist Goldy McJohn .
Steppenwolf enjoyed worldwide success from 1968 to 1972, but clashing personalities led to the end of the core lineup. From 1980 to 2018, John Kay was the only original member involved, having been the lead singer since 1967. The band was called John Kay & Steppenwolf from 1980 to 2018.

Since then, John Kay and Steppenwolf-which now includes longtime members Gary Link (bass), Ron Hurst (drums), Danny Johnson (guitar), and Michael Wilk (keyboards) have released seven albums and maintained a busy international touring schedule that kept the band on the road for several months per year. The band also hosted Wolf Fest, an annual weekend-long festival that draws fans from around the world-fondly dubbed "the Wolfpack"-to the band's adopted home base in Tennessee.

In 1974, Steppenwolf reunited with the majority of its original lineup, but was unable to replicate their early successes, ultimately splitting again in 1976 after releasing three albums which largely stayed under the radar. In 1980, Kay reformed the group with mostly new members, renaming the band John Kay and Steppenwolf.
